Getting started

The licensure process can feel overwhelming, but CLARB is here to support you every step of the way. We've prepared this checklist to ensure you have everything you need to apply efficiently and successfully using your CLARB Record.

The CLARB Record serves as a common application for licensure, consolidating your information into a single, trusted source. By simplifying the licensure application process, it reduces redundant paperwork, supports career mobility and provides a reliable resource for both licensure applicants and regulatory boards.

Think of your CLARB Record as a detailed, verified version of your resume.

You'll need verified documentation of your:

  • Educational background
  • Professional experience
  • Examination results
  • Licensure history (if applying for reciprocal licensure)

You can begin entering information into your CLARB Record at any time. Just remember: all sections — education, employment, examination and registration — must be verified before your Record can be transmitted to a licensing board.

Documentation to gather

Educational background

  1. Institution name and attendance dates
    1. List each college or university where you earned a degree.
    2. Include the name of the institution and the dates you attended.
    3. Only include high school information if it is your highest level of education.
  2. Education level
    • Specify the degree(s) you have earned (e.g., Bachelor’s, Master’s).
  3. Official transcripts
CLARB requires official transcripts to verify your education. Follow these steps:
    1. Request an official digital transcript from each institution.
    2. Transcripts must be sent directly from your institution to CLARB at info@clarb.org.
    3. If digital transcripts are not available, request an official printed copy to be mailed to:

  • Supervisor information
    • Name

    • Company (during the time of supervision)
    • Contact information (e.g. email, phone, address)

Tips for recording employment

  • CLARB will send verification instructions to your listed supervisors by email, so double-check their contact information for accuracy.
  • It's best to have your current position verified within the last three months.
  • Include employment for the past 10 years or since graduation (whichever is shorter).
  • Full-time employment dates must not overlap.
  • For time gaps longer than 3 months, submit an Unverifiable Employment Form. This documents any periods of unemployment, full-time education without work or unverifiable jobs.
  • View our additional guidance on the roles, responsibilities and expectations as it relates to gaining experience towards becoming a licensed landscape architect.

Examination results

  • Applicants with exam results after 2000, your exam history will automatically display in your CLARB Record and within a transmittal to your licensure board.
  • Applicants with exam results obtained prior to 2000 should contact CLARB for further instruction.

Licensure history

Gather the following information for all jurisdictions where you are licensed as a landscape architect:

  • Jurisdiction name
  • Registration/licensure number
  • Registration dates

Enforcement actions

Some licensure boards require details about previous registration issues. Be ready to provide:

  • Jurisdiction and date/timeframe of the incident
  • Report type (e.g., disciplinary action, lapsed license, withdrawn application)
  • Written explanation of the incident

If this section does not apply to you, it can be left blank.

Reviewing this checklist carefully and following the outlined tips, you’ll help ensure a smoother, faster review of your licensure application. If questions arise during the process, don’t hesitate to reach out to our Support Team for assistance.

Finalizing your application

Once your CLARB Record is complete and verified, it's time to apply for licensure.

  1. Request a transmittal to the licensure board in the jurisdiction where you're seeking licensure.
  2. You will receive an email from CLARB confirming that your transmittal has been sent to your licensing board.
  3. After requesting your transmittal, please contact the licensure board to:
    • Confirm that your Record has been received.
    • Complete any remaining application steps required by the board. It is your responsibility to ensure all board-specific steps are completed.

4. After you get licensed, remember to return to your CLARB Record to add your license details. This ensures you'll receive helpful reminders and resources for maintaining your license.
