Transitioning from Practitioner to Board Volunteer Leader​

​Serving on a nonprofit or regulatory board is a rewarding way to advance the profession and make a lasting impact, but it requires a different mindset than leading a practice or firm. This session will help you understand the unique responsibilities of volunteer leadership and how to navigate the shift from day-to-day operations to strategic governance.  

​ ​We’ll explore the core duties of board members — including fiduciary responsibilities, strategic decision-making and aligning around a shared vision — while also learning about common pitfalls new board members face and how to avoid them. The session will highlight the qualities of effective board leaders, from collaboration and trust-building to making meaningful contributions that keep the board focused on long-term outcomes.  

​ ​Presenters will also share practical guidance on what to expect as a new board member: preparing for your first meeting, understanding team dynamics and contributing throughout the board member lifecycle. Real-world examples from CLARB and design practitioners will illustrate how strong governance, outcome orientation and a partnership model with staff create effective and sustainable leadership.
