As extreme heat and UV exposure increasingly shape the performance of public spaces, shade must be understood as critical infrastructure, not simply amenity. While tree canopy remains foundational to resilient landscapes, today’s climate and urban conditions require broader, layered approaches to thermal comfort and human protection.
Together we'll explore how fabric shade structures can work alongside living systems to support health, safety and well-being through immediate thermal comfort, measurable UV protection and adaptable design performance. Through case studies and performance-based design examples, presenters will challenge conventional assumptions about shade while positioning both trees and shade structures as integrated strategies for climate-responsive, people-centered outdoor environments.
This course addresses how extreme heat and UV exposure impact the health, safety and usability of outdoor public environments. We’ll explore performance-based shade strategies — including tree canopy and fabric shade structures — that improve thermal comfort, reduce exposure risk, support equitable access, and enhance climate resilience in public spaces. You’ll learn how integrated shade infrastructure contributes to safer, healthier and more functional outdoor environments.

- Evaluate how shade contributes to health, safety and welfare through thermal comfort and UV protection in outdoor environments
- Describe how fabric shade structures can complement tree canopy as part of integrated, climate-responsive shade strategies
