You don't need to request testing accommodations for some specific medical and communication items. Find the complete list of approved items on the PSI Test Taker Resources > Quick guides > Pre-approved comfort aids.
Accommodations
You may request accommodations when testing for the L.A.R.E. Many accommodations are available both at PSI Testing Centers and via online proctoring, however, some accommodations are only available at a PSI Testing Center. Please refer to your notice of approval from CLARB for details.
Disabilities
CLARB follows standards set by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to support candidates with disabilities. Documentation requirements vary by individual circumstances, but we typically ask you to submit a doctor’s note that includes the following:
- Specific diagnosed disability
- Daily symptom(s) of condition
- Specific accommodations requested (for example, if requesting additional time, doctor’s note should include how much time)
- How the requested accommodations mitigate the symptom(s)
Temporary medical conditions
Candidates with a temporary medical condition requiring accommodations may request testing accommodations. Documentation requirements vary by individual circumstances, but we typically ask you to submit a doctor’s note that includes the following:
- Specific condition
- Symptom(s) of condition
- Specific accommodations requested (for example, requesting an ergonomic chair due to injury)
- How the requested accommodations mitigate the symptom(s)
Lactation
Individuals may request additional time on the L.A.R.E. based on need. Please provide a doctor’s note.
English as a second language (ESL)
Candidates may request an accommodation to use a word-to-word (bilingual) translation dictionary during testing at a PSI Testing Center. To request this accommodation, please complete this form and send to Emily Bogstie.
- This accommodation is only available at PSI Testing Centers. This accommodation cannot be used with online proctoring.
- If approved, candidate must supply one printed bilingual word-to-word translation dictionary to use during testing. Only one dictionary is permitted, and the dictionary must be free of any notes, writing or markings.
- Test center staff will inspect the dictionary before and after the examination to ensure no additional notes, writing or markings are present. If notes, writing or markings are detected before, during or after testing, the dictionary will be confiscated and testing center staff will submit a security incident report.
Attention New York candidates
New York state will not accept an examination given under non-standard conditions except per the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Part 59.3 of the Commissioner’s Regulations requires that applicants for licensure demonstrate proficiency in English by passing a licensing examination given in English. Therefore, non-standard conditions including the use of a bilingual dictionary for applicants who are English as a second language (ESL) readers are not permitted. If a candidate passed the examination under such non-standard conditions for another jurisdiction, that candidate will be required to retake the examination under standard conditions.
