The Landscape Architect Registration Examination (L.A.R.E.) is developed based on a scientific job task analysis (JTA), conducted every five to seven years to ensure the exam reflects the current knowledge and skills required for licensure. The most recent JTA, completed in 2022, gathered input from over 3,500 licensed landscape architects across the United States, Puerto Rico, Northern Mariana Islands and Canada.

Through this process, survey participants evaluate the frequency, importance and necessity of specific job tasks at the initial point of licensure. A group of subject matter experts — licensed landscape architects representing diverse practice areas and geographic regions — analyzes the results to determine which tasks are most critical for safe and effective practice.

These findings shape the L.A.R.E. Blueprint, ensuring the exam assesses the core competencies required for professional practice.
