Proseries: Courses by CLARB

Every landscape architect has faced the trade-off: the client wants a lawn that stays green year-round, a play area that meets accessibility requirements or a green wall that survives a north-facing courtyard, and natural materials alone can't always deliver.

Synthetic surfacing has changed the equation. This course will give you a clear, practical look at what today's synthetic options can do, where they fit in your designs and how to make the case for them to clients and review boards. Whether you are specifying turf for the first time or refining details on a system you've used for years, you'll leave with information you can put to work on your next project.

As the implementation of synthetic surfacing for leisure and performance applications grows, artificial materials such as synthetic turf (grass), synthetic green walls and alternative surfacing options often outperform their natural counterparts.

Increased safety standards (like ADA and DOJ specs) and design expectations have accelerated innovation in the materials available to designers. This course outlines synthetic surfacing options and examines synthetic turf systems, detailing their design considerations, performance features, sustainability and health benefits, and associated return on investment (ROI).

Learning objectives
  • Gain a better understanding of sustainable surfacing and systems
  • Understand the importance of certified synthetic surfacing system installations
  • Explore new trends and innovations in synthetic surfacing
  • Identify use-case scenarios for future designs and projects
  • Understand new product technology, quality standards and design considerations
