Biophilic Design in Public Space
Course 3 of 3 in the ProSeries: Summer Learning Lineup
Learn how biophilic design supports the physical, psychological and social well-being of public spaces. We’ll explore how site furnishings — seating, shelters and planters — align with biophilic design principles to enhance public spaces. Learn how natural materials, organic forms and integrated greenery promote community health, safety and well-being. Understand how to specify materials and forms that reduce environmental stress, enhance safety through spatial clarity and natural surveillance, and promote equitable access to restorative outdoor environments.
Through real-world examples, you’ll gain strategies for creating restorative environments that reduce stress, encourage interaction and support sustainability, transforming urban spaces into vibrant, nature-connected places.
Learning outcomes
- Describe the historical context and foundational concepts of biophilic design.
- Identify and explain core biophilic design strategies relevant to public spaces.
- Analyze how site furnishings support biophilic design through materiality, form and integration.
- Evaluate how biophilic site elements contribute to human health, safety and well-being in the public realm.
